Linton Kwesi Johnson

Born in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in Brixton, London, Linton Kwesi Johnson was a major figure in the late 70’s early 80’s UK reggae scene. He invented what is known as Dub Poetry, mixing his political and socially aware poetry with the heavy bass lines of dub reggae. This set him apart from many reggae toasters who came before him, as they would be more concerned with bragging or women, than hard line politics.
Johnson has released many albums since his debut, “Dread Beat An’ Blood” in 1978, more recent albums being on his own LKJ Records label.
The track we have here is the classic “Inglan Is A Bitch”, taken from his 1980 album, “Bass Culture” .
I was lucky enough to see Linton perform his poetry at the Southbank Centre recently, and even though he may be getting older, he’s still as captivating as ever.
