Back in the late 90’s there was a new wave of British hip hop acts releasing records. Many of them seemed to take a slightly more left of centre approach to their music, taking inspiration from US crews such as Hieroglyphics, Quannum and so on. One of my favourite groups of the time were Aspects, hailing from Bristol.
Sadly the group have now split, but in their time they released a number of 12″/EP’s, 2 critically acclaimed albums, Correct English and Mystery Theatre and played many live gigs across the UK and Europe.
Here I have for you a track from their second EP, “Revenge Of The Nerds”. Released in ’99 on Hombre Records, I think this is my favourite of all the Aspects material. The track “Chinese Burns”, shows their off-key vision of hip hop and their dark sense of humour, so please check it out. Oh and while you are their make sure to check out the Folk Devils to hear what some members are up to now.
